Therapist in Training Program

The Therapist in Training Program provides 12-month supervision for candidates who wish to work toward US based licensure or who simply wish to develop confidence as a therapist/mental health provider. In the program, you will develop your therapeutic skills through your chosen theoretical approach and gain skills and tools to enhance your professional career. The criteria and structure of supervision meetings will be decided according to the guidelines set forth by the AAMFT.

Supervisor candidate and supervisee will provide one another with feedback on supervision effectiveness at the end of each supervision meeting. Supervisee will be formally evaluated by the supervisor candidate at the end of each three-month period.

Program FAQ
  1. Therapy/Counselling field – Psychotherapies in general, in which Tokyo Mental Health is prepared to provide instruction and supervision.
  2. Qualifications – Candidates must hold (or enrolled in a program towards) a Master’s degree in clinical psychology at the time of contract.
  3. Contract duration & work conditions – The contract is for 12 months. If, however, the supervisee is absent for more than two supervision meetings without either voicemail or email contact 24 hours in advance, or, if the supervision relationship is compromised due to unresolvable conflict between the supervisee and supervisor candidate, the contract will terminate at such time regardless of whether a full year has passed.
The frequency of our supervision meetings will be a minimum of weekly (more as needed on a frequency of 1 supervision hour per 10 hours of client contact).
Supervision may be conducted in dyads (two supervisees to one supervisor candidate) or individually depending on what is more conducive to our schedules and topics discussed.
  4. Application and screening schedule – Applications accepted: On a rolling basis
