A psychological test is an instrument used to measure a specific psychological aspect or characteristic of a client. This characteristic could be a dimension of personality, IQ, aptitude, behaviour, or any other dimension of mental function. These tests are designed, performed and scored in a standardized way, that is, they must be able to measure the same aspect in different people when performed by different testers, and have a high, demonstrable validity.
The results of psychological testing can be useful in several ways. In the clinical area, it allows therapists and psychiatrists to collect clinical patient information quickly and reliably, helping to determine the presence or absence of disorders of mental health, and their impact on the patients` lives.
In the field of education, psychological tests help us to understand how the learning processes work for individual students. Thus, we can find the areas of both strength and of weakness in which students need support. Vocational guidance tests are also used to help students choose their specialized education areas.
Similarly, in the science organisational psychology, psychological testing can be used to detect strengths and weaknesses for employees, facilitating selection and support of staff in the arena of employment.
There are many types and varieties of psychological tests available, and they are usually divided into two categories: projective tests and psychometric tests. We will deal with each category separately in future articles.
