Michael Nevans is a California Licensed Marital and Family Therapist working in Tokyo, Japan.
Michael pursued his education in Psychology at the University of California, San Diego (BA) and in Marital and Family Therapy at the University of San Diego (MA). After three years of field placement and additional education, Michael became a licensed marriage and family therapist in the state of California.
Michael specializes in individual, couples, family, and group therapy for teenagers and adults dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, adaptation struggles, grief & loss, and relationship issues. He has also spent over seven years working in the field of Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) treatment.
His work in the AOD field includes experience with interventions, early prevention, intensive outpatient care, and residential/detox services. He has consulted with various health professionals on AOD treatment options and has overseen interdisciplinary treatment teams in multiple settings. For direct client care in AOD, Michael has worked with individuals and, when appropriate, their family members, on working toward a long lasting, realistic, recovery plan. He approaches AOD issues from a systemic perspective and looks to help the individual understand the formation of their addicted behaviors without shame or judgement. Michael utilizes evidence based practices that include motivational interviewing techniques, cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychoeducation in all of his AOD treatment plans.
As a therapist, he takes a client centered approach. Michael has received training and is experienced in cognitive-behavioral therapy, Bowen family therapy, brief strategic therapy, Imago (couples) therapy, and solution focused therapy.
He has been involved in outreach activities and speaking engagements in the Tokyo community. Michael has provided workshops, seminars, and other presentations to schools, universities, organizations, and corporations. The topics of these events include stress management, work-life balance, cultural adjustment, depression and suicide awareness, alcohol and chemical dependency recovery/support, value focused living, and identifying mental health issues in the workplace.
This year, Michael is working towards the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapist Approved Clinical Supervisor designation.
He provides psychological therapies and professional psychological supervision in English.
