Tokyo Mental Health is delighted to welcome Kevin Berna, a new addition to our international team of therapists. Kevin is a multilingual psychologist providing counseling in English, French, German, and Luxembourgish at our practice.
Kevin has been trained in clinical and developmental psychology at the University of Luxembourg, the University of Heidelberg, the University of Bristol, the University of Newcastle (Australia), and the Free University of Berlin. Additionally, he studied Japan studies in Berlin and Sociology within the Master’s Program of Global Studies at Sophia University in Tokyo, which helped him deepen his understanding of the challenges minorities and foreigners face in Japan. His experience as an elementary school teacher, psychological researcher, and certified nutritionist has also shaped his therapeutic approach as a psychological counselor.
Kevin has provided psychological counseling and neuropsychological diagnostics to a variety of adult patients in German hospitals. As a volunteer for the Luxembourgish Red Cross and the case manager for the Heidelberg University of Education’s PROTECT program, Kevin has offered counseling to children, adolescents, and their parents regarding behavioral and addiction-related issues.
His experience working with patients includes counseling for depression, ADHD, behavioral and substance addictions, as well as providing social skills training, communication training, and employing relaxation methods with various patient groups. His particular expertise lies in the treatment of persistent/chronic depressive disorder, internet-related addiction disorder, gaming disorder, and gambling disorder.
Throughout his career, Kevin has received training across the entire spectrum of evidence-based therapeutic approaches. He particularly employs methods from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Systemic Therapy, and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. His approach to the therapeutic alliance with clients is particularly influenced by Humanistic Psychology.
Depending on the needs and goals of his clients, Kevin is passionate about helping people address past challenges and experiences that impact their present life or focus on resolving current pressing issues. He strives to create a safe space marked by empathy, warmth, and care, where clients can embrace their strengths while exploring areas for growth. Kevin firmly believes that every individual is the true expert of their own life, and he is deeply inspired by their strengths, resilience, and unique stories.
When Kevin is not working at Tokyo Mental Health, he enjoys researching and developing preventive programs to combat mental health issues, as well as trying to roast his own coffee beans and studying the Japanese specialty coffee scene.
