Psychiatry and Psychiatric Treatment

Psychiatry is the branch of medicine that is devoted to the study, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders of mental health. Psychiatrists are medically trained doctors who have both a medical license to practice and have also received higher specialist training in clinical psychiatry.

Psychiatric assessment typically begins with a case history and mental state examination, and can include bedside psychological tests, physical examination, blood tests and other investigations where necessary. Mental disorders are usually diagnosed in accordance with diagnostic manuals such as the widely-used International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) published by the World Health Organisation, and American Psychiatric Association’s DSM-5.

Psychiatric treatment usually follows a bio-psycho-social model. This means that if you see a psychiatrist, treatment options should include biological treatments, such as antidepressant medication and other psychiatric medication, psychological treatment such as cognitive therapy and specific types of counseling, and social interventions such as lifestyle and workplace advice. For psychiatrists, psychological treatments usually include:
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) also called Cognitive Therapy
  • Mindfulness-based therapies (ACT, MBCT)
  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)
  • Compliance therapy
  • Motivational interviewing
  • Relaxation and behavioral therapies for panic and anxiety

Treatment decisions are made collaboratively with patients and psycho-education about mental health is a core part of the treatment process. Good psychiatry clinics now routinely use structured assessment tools to help assess treatment outcomes and provide patients with clear feedback on the progress they are making towards recovery.

Tokyo Psychiatry | About Psychiatry in Tokyo

Trying to find a psychiatrist in Tokyo? For those looking for English psychiatry in Tokyo, we invite you to consider the Tokyo Psychiatry Clinic at American Clinic. For those who are comfortable with Japanese psychiatry, Tokyo offers many psychiatry clinics, often conveniently located near train stations and at university hospitals. If you have Japanese Health Insurance, costs are low. Most Japanese psychiatry clinics in Tokyo offer appointments that require prior reservation by telephone. However, some ask patients to simply arrive during certain clinic hours and waits can be substantial. Japanese Health Insurance typically provides 30-minute initial psychiatric consultations, with follow-ups typically short of five minutes. Many Japanese psychiatrists will be able to read and write medical English well, but not all have good spoken English language skills. Most antidepressants and other psychiatric drugs commonly used in the West are available in Japan, but it can be more difficult to access cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, and other evidence-based psychological treatments.
