What is an EAP?

Across all industries, management teams are understanding the importance of having a workforce that is both physically and mentally well. The goal of an Employee Assistance Program is to make services that promote good health accessible to employees. While this can take different shapes depending on the company or organization, EAPs almost always include mental wellness services as mental health related issues account for over half of work-related health problems. Such services can include speaking with a professional counselor or seeing a medical doctor who specializes in psychiatry. Typically, companies provide 3-8 sessions or consultations per year with these providers for each employee who needs it.

Our interdisciplinary treatment team consists of a UK Japan-licensed psychiatrist, several bi and trilingual psychologists, and professional therapists. With our experienced team, we can serve any of your mental health workplace needs. From testing and assessment of attention deficit disorder, memory problems, traumatic brain injury or concussion, to therapy for stress, anxiety and depression. For medication for management of more severe depression and anxiety, Dr Andrew Kissane, our psychiatrist, also holds a psychiatry clinic at American Clinic Tokyo. Through our interdisciplinary treatment team TMH can effectively assess, triage, and treat any issue you or your employees may have.

TMH also has a variety of professional presentations and workshops that can be provided to small groups of people (3 or more) up to large audiences (100+). These presentations and workshops can be tailored for management, employees, or a mix of both. These experiences can run from a short 45 minute lunch time event or as long as a full day 8 hour training program. The topics we cover include, but are not limited to, identifying mental health issues in the workplace, stress management, work-life balance, value-focused living, motivational interviewing, and crisis response for mental health issues.


What sets TMH apart from the rest

In addition to our in house, interdisciplinary team, what sets us apart from other EAP providers is our ability to easily and effectively assess and triage an individual. Over the last few years TMH has been developing an online mental wellness assessment tool called Psynary. Psynary is a web based app that is offered in Japanese and English that allows an individual to do a full stress test, and depression and anxiety screening, all from the comfort of their home. These results can only be seen by the professional health providers at TMH, giving the individual the comfort of anonymity to answer honestly. As a part of our EAP service package, our mental health professionals then call or email the employee and provide a personalized recommendation for the next steps they should take, based on the severity of their issues. This process allows us to offer recommendations for care based on exactly what the employee needs, improving access to appropriate care and saving the employee time and the employer money.

By targeting treatment efforts to the employee’s problem areas, we are able to offer high quality, brief treatment interventions, perfectly geared for an EAP arrangement.
